Summer Is Over. Dubai Is Back. And So Am I.
How I reset my routine, work life, and mindset for Dubai's busiest season.
There's a very specific moment every year when you realize Dubai summer is coming to an end.
Your WhatsApp starts getting busier. Your LinkedIn feed wakes back up. Suddenly there are three events happening on the same Thursday night. Everyone who disappeared for the summer is back. Work goes from slightly quieter to "can we get this live by tomorrow?" and somehow your calendar for September is already looking suspiciously full.
Dubai is waking up again. And honestly? I kind of love it.
Summer in Dubai has its own rhythm. Things slow down slightly, people travel, the roads are a little quieter, and work can sometimes give you that extra bit of breathing room to plan, organize, brainstorm, and finally get around to the things that have been sitting on your list for months.
Then September arrives and something shifts. The city feels busy again. Meetings pick up, events return, campaigns start moving, people want to collaborate, new places are opening, and suddenly the final few months of the year don't feel very far away at all.
For me, this is always the point where I feel like I need a little reset.
Work Goes Into Another Gear
Working in marketing means peak season can get busy very quickly. Campaigns, shoots, events, content, meetings, deadlines, last minute requests. Everything seems to happen at once, and after the slightly slower pace of summer, it can definitely take a minute to adjust.
Over the years, I've realized that I can't approach September through December in exactly the same way I approach the quieter months. Summer is a brilliant time for thinking and planning. Peak season is when so much of that thinking turns into doing.
I try to plan further ahead, become more protective of my calendar, and get very clear on what actually needs my attention. It's easy to mistake being incredibly busy for being incredibly productive, and they're definitely not always the same thing.
I still love the chaos a little bit though. There's something about seeing ideas you've been discussing for months finally turn into real campaigns, content, events, and projects that gives me such a boost creatively.
My Routine Becomes Even More Important
Ironically, the busier work becomes, the more I need the boring little parts of my routine.
Working out, making my morning coffee, cooking dinner at home, getting outside, having a quiet evening, seeing my friends, and making time for the things that have absolutely nothing to do with work all become much more important.
I've learned that the busier my calendar gets, the more boring I need some parts of my life to become.
And I mean that in the best possible way.
When everything around me is moving at 100 miles an hour, having certain things that stay consistent keeps me sane. I know when I'm moving my body regularly, eating properly, sleeping enough, and giving myself some downtime, I show up better everywhere else too.
Of course, does this mean I'll suddenly have the perfect morning routine, eight hours of sleep every night, and a beautifully organized week for the next four months? Absolutely not.
But having a few non negotiables makes a huge difference.
I Get Much Better at Saying No
Peak season in Dubai can also make you feel like you need to be everywhere.
There are launches, dinners, networking events, birthdays, brunches, work events, catch ups, openings, and approximately 400 things happening every weekend.
And I love being social. I love going out. I love trying new places and being around people. But I've also learned that saying yes to absolutely everything is the fastest way to make myself exhausted.
So this time of year, I try to be a little more intentional about where my time goes. If I'm genuinely excited about something, amazing. If I'm only saying yes because I feel like I should be there, maybe that's an evening I need to keep for myself instead.
Peak season doesn't mean you personally need to peak every single day.
Sometimes staying home, ordering dinner, and doing absolutely nothing is exactly what the calendar needs.
But Mostly, I Get Excited Again
For all the talk about staying organized and protecting my routine, the truth is that I really do love this time of year in Dubai.
There's an energy that comes back to the city. Everyone is here again. Work feels exciting. New ideas start moving. Events return. People are making plans. And slowly but surely, we start getting those evenings where being outside doesn't feel like stepping directly into an oven.
As someone who works in a creative industry, I think I feed off that energy more than I realize. Seeing people doing things, launching things, building things, and creating things makes me want to do more myself.
It feels like a fresh start in a way. Not quite New Year energy, but definitely a little right, we're back, let's do this energy.
Going Into Peak Season
I'm not going into this season with a 5am morning routine, a perfectly color coded calendar, eight hours of sleep every night, and every minute of my life optimized. Let's be realistic.
I'm just going into it knowing myself a little better than I did last year.
I know I need my routine. I know I need to move my body. I know I need quiet evenings just as much as I need exciting ones. I know I work better when I plan ahead. I know I don't have to say yes to everything. And I know that when things inevitably get a little chaotic, it's usually because there are also a lot of exciting things happening.
So my plan for the next few months is pretty simple: work hard, protect my routine, make plans I'm genuinely excited about, leave a little white space in my calendar, and enjoy the fact that Dubai is about to become Dubai again.
Summer was lovely.
But I'm ready for the chaos.
